Turn for the betta?
For the last few weeks I have been dealing with an illness in the house--things just haven't been right with Tom the fish. His eye had been looking funny for awhile, and then he started puffing out his little chest almost all the time, whereas before he only did it when he was in fight mode looking at himself in the mirror. By the end of last week, his eye was huge and he wasn't moving much. He clearly had popeye (left), a disease characterized by hugeness of the eye. The cause of the popeye may or may not have been me being less than fastidious about water changing, but I was afraid too much water changing would be stressful!
Anyway, I went to Petco on Saturday and got some industrial strength medicine with the instructions from the clerk to "just hope this works. If nothing changes in a week or so [shrug]...I'm sorry for your loss." Things seem to be improving. Tom doesn't look much better but he is quite active and both he and Alge have been blowing bubbles like crazy with the more frequent water changes and warmer water. Popeye is only fatal if it's a manifestation of another illness (ie: TB), so I'm hoping if he's lived with it this long he'll be ok. The remaining problem is that I think he may be blind now, at least partially. He's having a really hard time eating. He has no idea the food's there if you don't drop it right in front of his face, and often when he does see it he'll go after it and miss, then chase it around the tank chomping and missing. I've tried feeding him with tweezers but he hasn't taken to that yet. Fortunately my fish are both obese so he should be ok eating less than normal.
