Delayed update for all those following my athletic endeavors:
I completed my first 5k on Sunday. This was a pretty big deal for me since, as you'll remember, I hadn't run more than 2 continuous miles (give or take a 10th) before registering, and turns out I still hadn't run more than that as of race time. That trip to Aruba sort of put a damper on my training (I'd planned to do at least a little exercising, but that went down the tubes when we discovered the gym closed at 4 and it was 90 degrees out at all times). This was probably just as well though, because it'd been so long since I ran before the race that I didn't have any extra anxieties about how I hadn't trained well and was therefore surprisingly calm.
I finished without toooo much of a struggle and only a little bit of grunting toward the end. The worst part of it all was that the finish line was visible from not long after the 2 mile mark, so I got all excited to be almost done, only to realize I had 9 blocks left. My time was a respectable 30:36, about what I expected, though I'd hoped I'd surprised myself by doing under 10-min miles. I was 78 out of 105 in my division: males 25-30. Don't ask. Had I been with my actual sex and age group, I'd have been around right around the middle of the pack.
