Bringing up Baby
I have a slightly more intense interest in baby names than the average person, but I found this article from slate fascinating. It discusses a study on the importance of first names, specifically whether having a super black name is detrimental to a child's success. The answer was yes, not because racist employers or admissions directors are rejecting Marquises and DeShawns, but because the type of parents who gives their child a distinctively black name are often worse off socioeconomically than parents who give more mainstream names. But my favorite part was the list of most popular crossover girl and boy names as well as the whitest and blackest girl and boy names. If only my name was spelled with a "u."
